Recertification

The National Certification Board for Anticoagulation Providers requires all CACP's to recertify every five (5) years. At present, the Board requires recertification by examination, although alternate methods may be considered in the future. Applicants for recertification are NOT required to submit documentation for 36 patient encounters. However, applicants for recertification must provide a description of their current activities in anticoagulation therapy management. Individuals who are not currently actively engaged in the management of patients on anticoagulation therapies are not eligible for recertification.

Online Recertification

In an effort to simplify and improve the recertification process, the NCBAP has developed an online recertification system. Recertification applicants now have the opportunity to take the CACP exam online. If online recertification is selected, the candidate will be responsible for:

  1. making arrangements to sit for the online exam at an independent computer terminal, not a home PC
  2. making arrangements for an independent proctor

The online exam is a proctored exam. Although the exam may be completed online, you must have a proctor present for the duration of the exam. Additionally, you must schedule a specific date and time for your exam so that technical support will be available by phone for the duration of your exam. In most cases, at least 2 exam dates will be offered each month. A limited number of examinees may sit for the exam on any given exam date, and spots are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

As an examinee, you are responsible for securing your own proctor for the exam. An individual who could be eligible to take the CACP exam is NOT an eligible proctor, even if that individual has no intention of taking the exam. Acceptable proctors include librarians, test center staff members, and any other individual who would not be eligible to take the CACP exam. Your proctor should not be a relative or close friend. The NCBAP Board must approve your proctor prior to your exam date.

The NCBAP has confirmed that many public libraries will provide this proctor service at no charge. Additionally, test centers such as the Sylvan Learning Centers may be able to proctor your exam for a fee. If you choose to use a proctor who charges a fee, you are responsible for paying that fee directly to the proctor. Any fee charged by the proctor will be in addition to the cost of the CACP exam.

You and your proctor should agree on the date, time, and location of your exam. You may not take the exam at your private residence. The NCBAP suggests that the exam be taken at a local library, university or college, or test center.

Here are the steps to take the online exam:

  1. Submit your application and fee as instructed in the Candidate Handbook. You must provide contact information for your proctor with the application. Encounters are not needed for recertification.
  2. You will be notified by email once you have been approved to sit for the exam with the proctor you specified.
  3. Follow the instructions in your email notification to determine available test dates/times. Agree on a date/time with your proctor.
  4. Follow the instructions in your email notification to register for your chosen exam date/time. Note that the number of examinees allowed to test in each time slot is limited and will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis.
  5. Once you have scheduled your exam date/time, confirmation and passwords will be emailed to both you and your proctor. These passwords will allow you to access your online exam on your scheduled exam date.

If you are interested in online recertification, please download the new CACP Candidate Handbook and Application. Follow the instructions in the handbook to apply to recertify online.
